Where? Shrewsbury Mart, in the Hereford Cattle Society autumn sale

When? 30th September 2023

Why? despite having a cow sale in 2022, our shed was full again last winter! We aren't go to put another shed up, so we are selling a batch of good breeding heifers

What? 2 bulling heifers, 4 incalf heifers, plus a calved heifer with a good bull calf at foot.

Cow Families- what's it all about? Now for the "science bit"!

Mitochondrial DNA is passed fom the mother to her offspring UNCHANGED via the egg, not split and recombined like nuclear DNA.

The sire of a calf does not pass his mitochondria to the embryo, as they are left in the mid-piece of the sperm, outside the egg at fertilisation.

As these unchanged genes from the dam are in the power-stations / mitochondria of the cells, it is thought they are more concerned with energy production and general "thrift" of the animal.

This is the reason you have good cow families and bad ones! The best of bulls maystill disappoint you when used on dodgy females!

Our DAWN COW FAMILY comes from the Romany herd. We bought a heifer at Carlisle and our Moorside Dawns & New Dawns are descended from that heifer.

Lot 8's dam has a great udder- neat & tidy, level, even, with distinct small/medium sized teats. Dawn 1st. is in her "working clothes" below, taken summer 2021

Moorside 1 New Dawn 4th sold for 5500 gns, in calf to Coley 1 Pilot to Iain Wilkinson of Redstroke Herefords. Iain bought a total of three Moorside females on the day to add to his Moorside heifer bought at DGS'20

We are about to flush this 9 year old cow, Moorside 1 Evita 3rd to Coley 1 Pilot. We will transfer some our selves and the surplus will be available for sale in GB. Call us to discuss.

Evita is a stalwart of the herd, having given us several top selling heifers and also a bull into AI.

She is our of the Barwise Argentinian sourced line and bu K-Cow NachoMan.

She is a strong cow with length, good locomotion, good udder and obvious eye pigment.

We sold all three Pilot progeny that we took to the Shrewsbury Society Sale. No records broken, but a good average and all met with demand and went to new homes. We thank the bidders and buyers.

Our next sale is at Carlilse on May 22nd. This is closer so we can take more entries- One yearling bull and four yearling heifers are entered.
